About our Council
Council 10836, St. John Neumann, Austin TX 78746 was officially organized in 1984 under the guidance of William Greve, our first Grand Knight along with the original Charter Members. Fourty-one years later, our membership exceeds two hundred men and their families. Many of our original members continue to serve this community.
Generally, we meet once every month where we establish annual financial and service goals for specific charitable causes, organize committees and monitor “Asks” and “Actions”. We generate funds by family volunteer service hours and parish involvement and spend those funds every fiscal year according to not for profit organizations. Our Organization provides the organization structure and mission to support all St. John Neumann Catholic Priests, Staff and Community programs. It is important to understand we are NOT a foundation – We are a Catholic Fraternal Service Organization!
If you ask each ministry in Texas, you will find a knight and/or his wife and often his children participating or leading these ministries. This is probably the most important aspect of Active Participation in the Knights of Columbus- namely synergy in our Faith, our Families, our Community and our Life! Planning the Service and Making it a Reality and together Building God’s Kingdom here at St. John Neumann one day at a time – one family at a time – one new member at a time and yes one member passing at a time. This is our Legacy.

Knights of Columbus:
A Brief History
Founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus began as a mutual benefit society for Catholic immigrants facing discrimination and hardship. Father McGivney envisioned a fraternal organization that would provide financial support to families in need while fostering a strong sense of community and faith.
Today, the Knights of Columbus remain a leading Catholic fraternal organization, known for its charitable endeavors, insurance services, and advocacy for Catholic causes. They continue to uphold the founding principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.
Knight’s of Columbus Founder’s Day: March 29, 2025
March 29th is Founder’s Day, Celebrating 143 years honoring the fraternal vision of our Founder, Blessed Michael McGivney.
Michael Joseph McGivney, born on August 12, 1852, was an Irish-American Catholic priest living in New Haven, Connecticut. He founded the Knights of Columbus on March 29th, 1882 at St. Mary’s, in New Haven, to serve as a mutual aid and fraternal insurance organization for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States. McGivney passed away in Thomaston in 1890 from pneumonia. In 1996, the Archdiocese of Hartford began the process of canonizing McGivney. He was approved for beatification on May 27, 2020, meaning that McGivney could be declared ‘blessed,’ the step just before sainthood. A further miracle attributed to McGivney’s intercession will be necessary before he is canonized as a saint.
The Knights of Columbus have grown to become the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization. It helps refugees, Catholic education, local parishes and dioceses, and global Catholic social and political concerns. The Knights advocate and promote the Catholic viewpoint on public policy issues such as the end of abortion and care for people with special needs
